Jane Bowles was an Jewish-American, bisexual writer. Her work has been described as ‘darkly comic’, and admired by Truman Capote and Alice B Toklas among many of her contemporaries (Jewish Women’s Archive). Truman Capote described her as “that genius imp, that laughing, hilarious, tortured elf”.

“What most impressed me about Jane, the person, was her concern for others, for their comfort and their entertainment. The important little things, especially such as providing meals, acquainting you with the right doctors in foreign places, conducting you through markets, introducing you to the interesting people, and somehow, in the midst of confusion, finding the precisely right words to reassure you in your own confusion these were her particular gifts ways to get agreeably through day and evening.”- Tennessee Williams from the foreword, 1974.
