Pear S. Buck was the first American woman to have won the Nobel Prize for Literature (1938). She won a Pulitzer Prize for her best known novel The Good Earth (1931). Most of her books are set in China, where she grew up as the daughter of missionaries. “As a feminist who supported the equal rights amendment in the 30's and 40's when most women's groups opposed it, an antiracist who opposed segregation and the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II, an opponent of imperialism… a believer in -- and practicer of -- women's right to sexual and professional self-expression, she was way ahead of her time.” (New York Times, 1996).
