Nelly Sachs was a Nobel Prize-winning Jewish German-Swedish poet and playwright. After learning she was destined for a forced-labour camp in Nazi Germany in 1940, she and her mother escaped to Sweden where she spent her life writing and translating. Her early work was influence by German Romanticism, while her writing in Sweden was informed by her desire to bear witness to Holocaust victims. Her best known play is Eli: A Mystery Play of the Sufferings of Israel, which is included in the O the Chimneys collection.
