Shirley Jackson was an American gothic and horror fiction writer. She published over 200 short stories, two memoirs, and six novels. A protofeminist, Jackson chronicled the lives of mid-20th century women. Jackson wrote about witchcraft as “a way of embracing and channeling female power at a time when women in America often had little control over their lives.” (Franklin, 2016).
