Drawn from the most recent data available, this national profile focuses on family, household composition, and women's income position by age and type of household, labour force participation, and responsibility for children. Housing tenure status, housing condition, and women's shelter costs are also discussed. Using this highly significant data, the authors demonstrate the degree of economic strength and special needs women carry into the housing market. Reviewing extensive housing and policy literature, the authors confirm that women as housing consumers were startlingly invisible in pre-1980s policy and program development.
