Colette was a French writer, actress, journalist, mime, and queer icon. Colette is best known for her 1944 novella Gigi, whose stage production helped to launch the career of Audrey Hepburn. Her writing style was a “blend of the sophisticated and the natural, laced with all the subtle cadences of sensuous pleasures and intuitive acumen.” (Britannica). She was the first woman in France to be given a state funeral in French history. Before her death, journalist and writer Katherine Anne Porter wrote in the New York Times that Colette "is the greatest living French writer of fiction; and that she was while Gide and Proust still lived.”
