Lorraine Hansberry was an American playwright and writer. She was the first Black woman to have written a play performed on Broadway, and the youngest American to win a New York’s Critics’ Circle award. She spent her career heavily involved in the civil rights movement, and writing for the black publication Freedom Newspaper; as well as the lesbian publication, the Ladder, where she wrote about the intersectionality of homophobia, misogyny and racism. Her groundbreaking play, Raisin in the Sun, 1959, is about a black Chicago family dealing with housing discrimination and racism. She is considered one of the most important figures in American theatre.
