Mary McCarthy was a critic, writer, and political commentator, and is known as one of the leading women intellectuals of the twentieth century. McCarthy earned a reputation of being a “modern American bitch” with a “devastating female scorn” among certain male critics. McCarthy has said that Birds of America (1971) was her favourite of all her novels.
