George Sand, pseudonym of Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dudevant was a French Romantic writer and memoirist. She was also known for defying an 1880 Parisian law that required women to apply for a permit to wear men’s clothing. Sand had many love affairs with artists and intellectuals, including composer Frederic Chopin, and actress Marie Dorval.
