Edna O’Brien is an Irish short story writer, novelist, and playwright. She has won numerous literary awards, and is considered one of the greatest contemporary narrators of the female experience. Her first novel, The Country Girls (1960) was banned in Ireland for its bold depictions of female sexuality.
