Kate Wilhelm was one of the first few American women science fiction writers writing under their own names in the 1960s. Wilhelm’s sci-fi focused on the advancement of human relationships and social structures and less on scientific advances. Wilhelm won many awards include the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1977 for Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang (1977).
