Jane Bowles was a Jewish-American, bisexual writer. Her work has been described as ‘darkly comic’, and admired by Truman Capote and Alice B Toklas among many of her contemporaries (Jewish Women’s Archive). Truman Capote described her as “that genius imp, that laughing, hilarious, tortured elf”. The Collected Works includes her only published novel Two Serious Ladies, written in 1943.
