Rachel Carson was an American marine biologist and conservationist whose 1962 book Silent Spring propelled the global environmental movement. Silent Spring sparked widespread environmental concern among the general public, outlining the environmental dangers of chemical pesticides. When first published, it was seen as the work of a “hysterical woman”, a “bunny lover”, and “spinster”, but eventually led to a ban on DDT and catalyzed the development of the US Environmental Protection Agency.
