Buchi Emecheta was a Nigerian novelist and playwright based in the UK. She wrote about life as a single mother, abuse of women, and racism in the UK. ‘The Bride Price’ was her first novel, about child marriage. Its original version was lost when her husband threw the manuscript on the fire, which prompted her leaving that long-time abusive marriage. She later re-wrote the novel, and it was published in London in 1976.
