Monica Dickens was a British writer, publishing over 50 books. Born into wealth and privilege as the great-granddaughter of Charles Dickens, she rebelled against that life; taking on domestic, nursing, and social work jobs. She went on to organize mental health groups for those struggling with depression, and volunteer as a 'Samaritan' taking calls on a mental health hotline.. The Listeners, first published in 1970, is inspired by her own work as a ‘Samaritan’, exploring the realities of this work.
