Margaret Drabble is an English novelist and biographer. She published 19 novels, most of whose protagonists are women. Her books tended to address to reflect her own personal experiences, as well as English contemporary society vs the individual members of society. Her first novels explored the lives of women in the 60s/70s who dealt with the conflict of motherhood and intellectualism; addressed sexual, professional, and social conflicts.

Drabble has said that The Needle’s Eye is her favourite of all of her books. Though it was her fifth novel, she has said that it was the first time she could “actually write a novel” and had been able to express what she’d always wanted to.
