Maxine Hong Kingston was an American peace activist and writer of Chinese descent. In 1976 she published her first novel, “The Woman Warrior”, a memoir based on her upbringing in California. In the book, she uses “martial myth in feminist rebellion melded with fiction”, and is lauded for “crossing cultural boundaries and fusing literary genres in original ways” (The Guardian, 2003). She has been described as a preeminent chronicler of the migrant experience in the late 20th century (Aamer Hussein).
“[The Woman Warrior] is complex and captivating, a constant toggling between the mundane grit of the family’s laundry business and epic, surreal dreamscapes.” (The New Yorker, 2020).
