Shirley Jackson was an American gothic and horror fiction writer. She published over 200 short stories, two memoirs, and six novels. A protofeminist, Jackson chronicled the lives of mid-20th century women. Jackson wrote about witchcraft as “a way of embracing and channeling female power at a time when women in America often had little control over their lives.” (Franklin, 2016). We Have Always Lived in the Castle was her last novel, published just three years before her death.
